Jacob pilgrim way - On Apostle Jacobus traces in North Spain

View of the jacob-pilgrim-way
Distance to cover: about 290 km and 320 km respectively
Brief description:
The north of Spain is a surprising discovery for most people: a luscious green landscape with immemorial culture, full of temptations by cuisine, art and winery. Romantic valleys flow through diversified sceneries with towns, churches and monasteries which age dates back until the 9th century. Since the discovery of the apostle’s grave they are destination of millions of pilgrims, which march up to Santiago de Compostela on the hundreds of years old path network of minimal streets and trails.
Road trait:
For the most part, the bicycle route leads us on ash felt roads and solid agricultural lanes along varied hilly landscape. In parts it is not avoidable to cover short intermediate stages also on busier roads. Some lanes are plain, partly hilly terrain with gradients and short sections where you have to push your bike. The tour is well manageable with normal physical fitness.

3rd day Léon – Astorga about 52km
We leave the ancient Castillian king’s town Léon and cycle through the scenery stamped by abandoned clay villages that rather resembles a veld. We reach Astorga; the capital town of the Maragaterians as today’s stage finish. Most walking pilgrims have already covered a distance of about 1.600 km so far. The Bishops palace built by Gaudi and the gothic cathedral dominate the cityscape.
Old church
4th day Astorga – Ponferrada about 50km
In the forenoon we firstly follow the Codex Calixtinus by bike up to the Cruz de Ferro, the iron cross in a height of 1.500 m. From there we let our bikes freewheel downhill and enjoy the marvellous panorama view of the Castillian mountains until we arrive at Ponferrada.

Old town
5th day Ponferrada – Sarria 50km
Bus transfer to the O Cebreiro (about 28 km) – then we follow Canino de Santiago downhill to the green Galicia, passing the Pallozas, the Elliptic farms which remind of the time of the Celts. We arrive at our stage finish in Sarria where we visit remains of a castle, the church El Salvador and the Magdalena convent.
6th day Sarria – Lugo about 50km
Today an unspectacular stage lies ahead of us, passing small villages up to Lugo. A city awaits us there that is still completely surrounded by the old city walls of the 1st and 2nd century. Furthermore, the cathedral and the bishops’ palace are also worth seeing.
Santiago de Compostela
7th day Lugo – Santiago de Compostela ca. 50km or 96km respectively
After having left Lugo, we arrive at the Sobrado Lake soon, which invites a picnic in marvellously green scenery. Even if we are not real pilgrims, we will be overcome by a venerable feeling while approaching Santiago de Compostela. We twice have the facility to take up the bike bus in order to shorten the distance. However, well trained people will accomplish the distance of 96 km by bike. We meet again at the cathedral in Santiago – the bike riders and the walking pilgrims. Holy Jacobus gravesite is the destination of our bike travel.
Santiago de Compostela
8th day Santiago de Compostela
Extension (on demand) or self-directed departure (Airport Santiago de Compostela) We recommend an additional night in Santiago de Compostela.
