Bendictbikeway ...in the footsteps of Pope Benedict XVI...
- Trail distance approximately 235km
- This cycle tour does not just take in the biographic stations of the childhood and
youth of the current Pope, but also the beautiful places of worship and the notable
Benedictine, Sistine, Franciscan and Augustinian monasteries along the way.
The route is mostly flat, but there are occasional undulations to contend with.
Most of the route follows cycle and bridle ways, however there are sections
on sign-posted side roads to be circumnavigated.

- 1st day Wasserburg
- Individual journey to the middle age trading town and an overnight stay there.
- 2nd day Wasserburg - Mühldorf (around 50 km)
- Today we follow the Inn and, via Gars and Au, we continue to the impressive former
Augustinian Monastery St. Maria where the Pope had reed organ music lessons at
a young age. Through Aschau, home of the Ratzinger Family from December 1932
until Spring 1937, we reach Mühldorf, an historic town on the Inn with landmarks

- 3rd day Mühldorf - Burghausen (around 50 km)
- Today we will ride to Altötting via Tüßling. Altötting is well worth the visit, with the
wood-carved, soot-blackened "Black Madonna" and the bandstand with the
Chapel of Mercy just two great things to see. Altötting is the 'heart' of Bavaria
and one of the 'hearts' of Europe according to the Pope. Then we proceed to the
holy father's place of birth in Marktl. At the northern end of the market place,
you can find a placard marking the house in which he was born on 16 April 1927.
Our final destination for the day is Burgenhausen, home to Europe's longest castle.
- 4th day Burghausen - Waging am See / Surroundings (around 45 km)
- Via Raitenhaslach (beautiful baroque church) and Marienberg
(Maria Himmelfahrt Rokoko pilgrimage church), we continue on to Tittmoning.
With its well preserved townscape and distinctive castle, Tittmoning was home
to the Ratzinger Family from 1929 and is not called the dreamland of the
holy father's childhood for nothing. The family lived in the so called Stubenrauchhaus
(nowadays a bank). Our final destination for the day is Waging am See / Surroundings.

- 5th day Waging am See / Surroundings - Chiemsee (around 30 km)

from 1937, and then on to Traunstein. On 8 July 1951, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated
his ordination in the Traunsteiner Pfarrkirchen St. Oswald. We then continue on to
where we will we spend the night, Chieming, home to the Maria Himmelfahrt parish church.
- 6th day Chiemsee - Wasserburg (around 60 km)
- We ride to Gstadt am Chiemsee via Seeon with its former Benedictine monastery.
In Gstadt we have the option of taking a trip to Fraueninsel (the lady's island)
with its Benedictine monastery, or to Herreninsel (the gentleman's island) with
